Excursions and Highlights: Explore the Actun Tunichil Muknal caves, the ancient Maya sites of Cahal Pech and Xunantunich, and all San Ignacio has to offer. Enjoy the opportunity to embrace local culture through intensive service learning projects in the community alongside the people they will benefit. Life and Culture: Belize is located on the northeastern coast of Central America. It is the only country in the area where English is the official language, although Spanish and Kriol are more commonly spoken. With a diverse society, comprising many cultures and languages, it is the only nation in the region with a British colonial history; but as a part of the Western Caribbean Zone, it also shares a common colonial history with Anglophone Caribbean countries. |

GPA Requirement:2.0 Academic Area:College of Health Sciences Minimum Class Standing:Freshman Number of credits:3 Program Adviser:Jarris Lanham Non-GC Students:Yes Additional Experiences:Service Learning Description:This course will integrate concepts from various interdisciplinary fields including sociology, history, international relations, government, politics, cultural studies and ethics through a health science perspective. Georgia College students will participate in service projects in conjunction with Sacred Heart Junior College and various other health related organizations in San Ignacio, Belize. The course will be taught through lectures, seminars and service learning experiences specialized for students in the health sciences (community health, exercise science, athletic training, nursing, outdoor education, and music therapy). Students will visit a wide range of Belizean historical, archaeological, health and cultural sites. Courses offered in kinesiology, nursing, outdoor education, or health sciences. Costs: $3,100 plus tuition and some meals. The program fee includes: International airfare, all housing, excursions, cultural events, insurance, ground transportation and most meals. Financial Aid/Scholarships: Students are eligible to carry existing financial aid and scholarships on Georgia College approved study abroad programs. Students may also be eligible to apply for the following scholarships: Georgia College Study Abroad Scholarship, Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Scholarship, and more. Non-Georgia College Students: We gladly accept non-Georgia College students as participants in this program. In addition to applying for this program, non-GC students must have also applied for admission to Georgia College as either a transient student (if currently seeking a degree at another university) or a non-degree seeking student (if already completed a bachelor's degree and seeking continuing education). |
